The northern historical route takes the visitor to Ethiopia’s most famous monuments, including the millennia old ancient Stelae of Aksum, the medieval rock-hewn churches of Tigray and Lalibela, and the 16th century castles of Gondar. Visit the cultural and wildlife sanctuaries of south Ethiopia particularly Netch-Sar, and Omo – the astonishing parts of this tour. This tour takes you to the spectacular Blue Nile gorge; Blue Nile falls and to Ethiopia’s largest lake – Lake Tana. The lake is home to a remote island monasteries and sanctuaries for centuries of Ethiopian ecclesiastical tradition. You will also see the medieval Gondar castles, the millennia old Aksum, 5th to 13 century Tigray and Lalibela rock churches.
There is also trekking to the Simien highlands which constitute one of the major mountain massifs in Africa. The region includes many summits above 4,000 meters and culminates in the highest point in Ethiopia, Ras Dashen, at 4,543 meters (14,904 feet), the fourth highest mountain in Africa. In addition to the spectacular scenery, the region contains a number of unusual botanical phenomena and some of the rarest animals in the world.
Journey to the lower Omo Valley where some of the most fascinating and colorful ethnic groups of Ethiopia are to be found. In addition to the diverse and fascinating peoples and cultures, it is home to rich wildlife and beautiful scenery. This ranges from the dry, open, savannah plains to the riverine forest that borders the Omo and Mago rivers.
Towards the south east, there you will find one of the holiest sites of Islam – Harar, a 600 year old walled town which has a pleasant and colourful middle eastern tradition. You will explore the markets, cuisines, mosques, it’s five gates and many more.
Ethiopia’s Bale Mountains are great trekking site and the largest area of Afro Alpine habitat in the whole of the African continent.
The Danakil is located in Northern Ethiopia, in the Afar region. It is known as the ‘hottest place on earth’ but that title does the place so much injustice. The Danakil region is so much more than how high the temperature gets – it’s unique geological features are the ones that draw visitors to visit despite the cost, the many hours of off road driving, and barebones accommodation.
